My daughter’s review of Afrique en Cirque:

What was your favourite part?
My favourite part was all of it.

Cirque Kalabanté combines circus, dance, music played on traditional instruments and a joyous spirit. It’s full of energy and vibrancy. The acrobatics are daring and are even more stunning in the intimate setting of the grand. There is contortionism and acrobatics on a large hula hoop, while everything is grounded in dance and movement. This is a creative blend of circus and dance, while remaining incredibly engaged with the audience, whether it’s while juggling or standing on each others shoulders.

This production is even more lovely with the addition of drums that the artist play on stage or the drum off stage that is steady throughout the production. It’s the pulse of the show on which the artist layer their voices.

This production is so vibrant and joyous and the intimacy of the theatre makes the show even more compelling.

Cirque Kalabanté’s performance of Afrique en Cirque is presented by Springboard Performance as part of the Fluid Festival. This was a one time performance but there are so many productions that are part of the festival. More information is available online.
